WHAT IS FACULTY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT?
Faculty leaders at the University of California guide, direct, and influence people for success within the complex shared governance framework of the institution.
For the purposes of this website toolkit, faculty leadership development is an intentional process of preparing mid-career faculty (Associate Professors through Full Professor below Step VI) to step into and thrive in campus administrative roles. This phase of the faculty career is often the first time when faculty, who now have tenure, are able and interested to look outside or beyond their faculty-specific position and consider how else they might want to contribute to the department, school, college, or University.
We distinguish between professional development - increasing faculty members’ ability to do their best research, teaching, and service - from leadership development, acquiring the skills necessary to be an effective administrator. For a consideration of faculty professional and leadership throughout the faculty career life course.
